"Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, ‘I am God Almighty; Walk before Me, and be blameless’" Genesis 17:1.
The capitalization is easily ignored, but quite important. Bible translators, out of respect for His personal name, substitute “LORD” for the name, “Yahweh.” That name is closely associated with “I Am,” the self-existing One who has no beginning or end. Notice too that He calls Himself, “God Almighty” - El Shaddai in the Hebrew language. By this title He indicates that He, Yahweh, is the God above all gods; the mightiest of all so-called gods.
It is important that we know the God we profess to worship. Knowing that our God has a personal name, as each of have, is helpful in distinguishing Him for other so-called gods. Whether we choose to pronounce it, or how it is most correctly pronounced, is a matter of debate. What is most important is that He be worshiped with the utmost awe and respect.
El Shaddai, God Almighty, posed the question to Abram’s wife, Sarai, “Is anything too difficult for the LORD?” (Genesis 18:14). It obviously was a rhetorical question, but one we should ponder as we consider what our great God can do. So often we face obstacles and limitations, and size them up according to our abilities and resources. The “faith factor” causes us to consider His great question. If He is God Almighty, is He limited in any way?
El Shaddai called upon Abram to "walk before Me, and be blameless." This call is extended to each of us as well. If we would know Him, we must walk in the same direction with Him. and be complete. We walk before Him as people of integrity, which is what blameless literally means.
May our understanding, appreciation and awe of the Incomparable One grow today, and every day.
