"But Jesus called them to Himself and said, ‘You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” Matthew 20:25-28.
The way of Jesus and the kingdom of God is the way of the upside down pyramid. In the system of the world, the power is at the top, for which many people devote their best time and energy to try and climb to. But notice that Jesus sternly warned His disciples, “It must not be like that among you.” Kingdom work will not be accomplished through adapting the models of the business world, but rather through selfless service and sacrifice. The way up is the way down, strength is found in weakness, and true leadership is service.
Lest we think Jesus’ words are detached from reality, He personally demonstrated them through His own example: “the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” The One most deserving of the royal treatment chose instead the towel and basin, and the way of the cross.
What might be accomplished in and through us if we set aside pride and ambition, and chose lowly service in obscurity? As we prayerfully consider this question, and act upon the prompting we receive, not only will the cause of the kingdom be well served, but we will also find a companionship with Jesus that cannot be realized in any other way.
