"The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest" Luke 10:2.
Picture this scene in your mind: there is a large field of wheat, perfectly ripe and ready for harvest. The wheat crop would be beneficial to so many people in so many ways; it is literally ripe with possibilities. Now, picture the lonely figure of a man at the far end of the multi-acre field, a pair of scissors in hand, and a canvas bag draped over his shoulder. He begins the overwhelming task of harvesting the wheat in this painfully slow manner.
Perhaps Jesus had a similar scene in mind when He declared the great disparity between the harvest and the harvest workers. Undoubtedly He saw the many who were potentially responsive to the gospel call, but the relatively few who were gospel-bearers.
In today’s church culture, much done in the name of evangelism is little more than recruiting believers from one church to affiliate with another church. Meanwhile, the "lost sheep" remain lost, without benefit of hearing the life-saving message. One has to wonder how to better see the harvest, and become a dedicated harvester.
While developing a “harvest awareness” is challenging, the need to do so is unquestionably in harmony with the will of our Father, and His Son. As we read in Luke 15:7,10 - "there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance ... there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents" (Luke 15:7,10).
The end of the age is delayed for the very purpose of allowing a greater harvest: “The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).
Jesus instructs as to “pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” My harvest prayers are sadly lacking as I consider this clear admonition, but I feel prompted to add “the harvest” to my daily prayer list going forward. I challenge you to do the same.
