"Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things accomplished among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out for you in consecutive order, most excellent Theophilus; so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught" Luke 1:1-4.

Purpose gives perspective. The 'what' makes sense when we know the 'why.' The purpose of Luke's Gospel is clearly stated at the beginning. It is a detailed, consecutive account of the life of Christ as reported by eyewitnesses, "servants of the word."

An eyewitness is someone who can reliably testify to the truth of a matter because they were there. Jesus stated that His disciples would be empowered witnesses (Acts 1:8), because the risen Christ had provided them with “convincing proofs” over a period of forty days prior to His ascension to His Father in heaven (Acts 1:3). They were servants of the word, both the living word, Jesus, and the word of the gospel.

The baton is handed to us who run the race for Christ in this generation. We have become the embodiment of the gospel - the word - in the world today. As we are convinced from the consecutive record of Luke, and the authoritative word of the other letters and books of the Bible, we serve the word to a world that must be given opportunity to hear and respond. The reality of the written and living word within serves as a powerful witness and testimony to the world. Unbelievers will first encounter the word in us before they will encounter the written and living word of God.
