“But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:37-39

Following on the heels of words about suffering, hardship, persecution, and threats (verses 35-36), Paul lifts up one of the most triumphant declarations found anywhere in scripture. We are not merely survivors; we are overwhelmingly triumphant.

With the mention of “all these things” we are reminded that we are not exempt from life’s sufferings. We are not shielded from pain, but rather our faith transforms pain. It is not FROM these things but IN these things that we are victorious.

We “overwhelmingly conquer.” We gain surpassing victory; more than a win. Through Christ we more than endure, more than survive; we astoundingly triumph. But, we dare not think that this overwhelming victory is of our own doing; it is “through Him who loved us.” Even in this, it is not our grip on Christ, but His grip on us that is the source of victory.

Based on the ultimate triumph that is ours through Christ, Paul confidently asserts, “I am convinced.” Having personally undergone much suffering and pain, Paul speaks from experience. His settled conviction is not personal arrogance but resolute faith in the work of Christ.

When fears arise, we do well to meditate on the truth that Paul expounds on here. Death, demons, tomorrow, or our weakness can separate us. Absolutely nothing can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus. As such, we can suffer, risk, witness, endure, and even die with full assurance. Our greatest security is not found in favorable circumstances, personal strength, or even unwavering faith. It is found in an unwavering Savior.
