A poverty-stricken widow had every reason to be skeptical. The prophet Elijah appeared just as she was gathering sticks to build a fire and prepare what she believed would be her final meal before her meager supply was exhausted. Yet Elijah had the audacity to ask her to first bake him a small loaf from her last handful of flour and oil before providing for herself and her son. In faith, she obeyed, and God miraculously ensured that her flour and oil did not run out throughout the famine.

An even greater test of faith, however, lay ahead. Her son became gravely ill and died. In response to Elijah's fervent prayer, God performed the first recorded resurrection in Scripture, restoring the child to life. This miracle deepened the widow's faith and led to her remarkable confession: "Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is truth" (1 Kings 17:24).

These miraculous events recorded in 1 Kings 17 foreshadow the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Elijah's miraculous provision points forward to Jesus feeding the multitudes. The restoration of the widow's son anticipates Christ's raising of the widow's son at Nain, Jairus's daughter, and Lazarus, culminating in His own victorious resurrection. Jesus Himself referred to the widow of Zarephath (Luke 4:25–26) to demonstrate that God's saving grace extends beyond the boundaries of ethnic Israel. In this way, Elijah serves as a prophetic forerunner whose ministry points us to the greater Prophet, Jesus Christ.

As we apply these remarkable miracles to our own lives, we too are called to exercise faith. Even when our resources appear limited, we are challenged to honor the Lord with what we have, trusting Him to provide for our needs as we put Him first (cf. Malachi 3:10).

Likewise, like the widow who mourned the death of her son, we look in faith to the promise of the resurrection for our loved ones who have fallen asleep in Christ. Our hope rests in Jesus, who declared, "I am the resurrection and the life" (John 11:25–26). Because He has conquered death, we can "be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord" (1 Corinthians 15:58).

The widow's declaration concerning Elijah ultimately finds its fullest fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Moses foretold that God would raise up a Prophet like himself (Deuteronomy 18:15, 18), and Jesus is that promised Prophet. Therefore, what the widow confessed of Elijah is supremely true of Christ: "Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is truth" (1 Kings 17:24).
