Whoever and whatever has our ear has influence. So it's imperative that we be discerning.
"And He was saying to them, 'Take care what you listen to. By your standard of measure it will be measured to you; and more will be given you besides. For whoever has, to him more shall be given; and whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him.' " (Mark 4.24-25)
These words have contemporary significance in a social media age. Only recently has the phrase, "fake news," come to the forefront. Misinformation has factored into protests, hatred, and violence. Certainly the people of God should guard against such things at all costs.
What goes for secular information and input certainly goes for the spiritual. Am I getting information directly from Scripture, God's Son and Spirit, or second hand from those who teach and/or preach about it, or have an opinion about it? What results is the law of returns: the measure given is the measure received.
The daily discipline of Bible reading, study, and prayer is far more important than we might realize. We each are subject to a nearly endless stream of secular information and
misinformation. Unless our lives are grounded daily with timeless truth, we will inevitably be swayed by whatever
information or misinformation we are most attentive to.
Make the deliberate choice to let God's word truly have your ear.
