Caution: tripping hazard. The sign is usually prominent, and the danger area marked with bright tape or paint. And like that visible sign and bright marking, these words of caution beckon to us: "These things I have spoken to you so that you may be kept from stumbling." (John 16.1)
The things spoken are urgent words from a man on the night he faced a death sentence. Jesus was concerned for His followers, who were also about to face the greatest challenge of their lives. So, He reminds them of the coming Helper, the Spirit of truth (John 14.16-17, 26, 15.26-27, 16.7-14). He reminds them of their vital need to stay connected to Christ, as branches are connected to a vine (John 15.1-11). He reminds them of His ultimate triumph, and their triumph through Him (John 16.22,33)
His cautionary words are as important to us as His original band of disciples. John chapters 14-17 are especially urgent and important in preventing us from stumbling. These words are the caution sign and bright markings that help keep us from harm in the "tripping hazard zone" of this present world system. And, there is far more in these chapters than the few highlights we've referenced here. They are worthy of serious study and application.
Walk carefully and wisely today. There are plenty of stumbling hazards around us. But, Christ has them clearly marked for those willing to see. Be safe out there, for Christ's sake and yours.
