Surrounded!

"Then Hezekiah took the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it, and he went up to the house of the LORD and spread it out before the LORD. Hezekiah prayed to the Lord saying, 'O LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, who is enthroned above the cherubim, You are the God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. Incline Your ear, O LORD, and hear; open Your eyes, O LORD, and see; and listen to all the words of Sennacherib, who sent them to reproach the living God ... Now, O LORD our God, deliver us from his hand that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, LORD, are God'" Isaiah 37:14-17,20.

The situation was grim; defeat seemed certain. The enemy had a far larger and better-equipped army, and had the entire city surrounded and cut off. A verbal threat was read, which had been dictated and presented to King Hezekiah. The logical solution would have been to seek the terms of peace and surrender. But, Hezekiah's response was prayer rather than despair. He took the letter and spread it out before the LORD and prayed. He recognized and acknowledged the LORD God as superior to all earthly powers and sought His attention for the crisis at hand. He sought victory and deliverance as a witness to the power and person of the One true God. And God answered! If you read on in Isaiah 37:36-37, you will see that an angel struck and killed 185,000 Assyrian soldiers, and Sennacherib the king departed and returned home in shame.

I'm wondering what armies seem to have you surrounded today. What insurmountable obstacles do you face? Let me encourage you to do as Hezekiah did and "spread it out before the LORD." Call upon the One who is over all the kingdoms and powers of the earth. Remind Him of the obstacles you face, and seek deliverance as a testimony to others.

The enemy would have us look at circumstances, but our Father would have us look at the limitless possibilities through Him. Through eyes of faith, things are not always as they seem. Defeat may seem evident but victory is within grasp for those who seek the God of all possibilities.

Join me today is taking that which may appear to be certain defeat and "spread it out before the LORD". He sees, knows, and wants to bring victory as a testimony to others.
