"Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth Does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable. He gives strength to the weary, And to him who lacks might He increases power. Though youths grow weary and tired, And vigorous young men stumble badly, Yet those who wait for the LORD Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary" Isaiah 40:28-31.
Knowledge and faith must go hand in hand. 2 Timothy 1:12 says, "I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day." Paul knew the One he had believed. Isaiah appeals to us to know and believe.
Know that you have an everlasting Father, Yahweh, who has created all that exists. Know that He is eternally tireless, and unquestionably understanding. Know and believe that, because these are true of Him, He is able to abundantly strengthen the weary and weak. Let this knowledge lead to faith in His infinite ability to strengthen.
"Do you not know? Have you not heard?" Isaiah's questions seem directed to the skeptic. Those who were discouraged and weak needed this important reminder. In weakness and discouragement, remember Him who is never weak or discouraged, and who abundantly supplies strength and encouragement to those who desperately need it.
This may well be the reminder you need today. Life is tough, and recent circumstances may have taken a toll on you. There may be temptation to throw in the towel, walk away from your faith and service, and separate from the people of God. Know and hear: your everlasting Creator Father strengthens and encourages His people with His limitless ability to do so.
Overdue bills sometimes come with a note stating that "this is a friendly reminder." Isaiah's words come with a "friendly reminder" of the One who strengthens sufficiently for us to soar like eagles, and walk and run without diminished energy.
Wait for it. From your most extreme weakness, you are just about to run, walk, and soar. Know, hear, and believe it, because it is absolutely true.
