A New Song

"And they sang a new song, saying, ‘Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth’” Revelation 5:9-10.

Many church attenders can attest to the awkwardness of new music. While new expressions of worship through song are beneficial, learning a new song can be frustrating. Perhaps the key is too high, or the tune uncomfortably unfamiliar. As creatures of habit, we might prefer what we’ve already learned. Besides, why is a new song needed anyway?

A new song is sung by an angelic choir, as we have read in the text. It may not be a new musical composition, but the lyrics are decidedly new. They are new because of a great event that has just taken place. The resurrected and ascended Christ has taken possession of a scroll of monumental importance. The culmination of the ultimate plan of God will be fully realized through the breaking of each of the seals by the One uniquely qualified to do so.

Among His credentials is His sacrificial death, whereby people from every nation, language, and location are purchased. These He has set apart for the new government, with the supreme honor of serving at public servants in the new global order, under His leadership.

A new song is needed to celebrate and sing of the new reality the lyrics reveal. As those directly impacted, there is sufficient cause for us to join the angelic chorus. The concluding events of this age are underway, all the while that we are joined with those being called out from a system in the throes of defeat and death. The choir is ever being enlarged!

You and I need something to sing about today. Even if our singing quality is comparable to ball bearings in a blender, the truth at the heart of our singing generates energy and emotion that engages our entire being in great, heartfelt worship and praise. Because of the truth of the lyrics we sing, let’s let our song of praise today be glorious, regardless of current circumstances. We see of what will be as through it already is.
