“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain” 1 Corinthians 15:58.
Quitting is often a tempting option. When things are more difficult than expected, we consider an exit strategy - quit the job, file for divorce, resign the office, drop out of school.
The life of a follower of Christ is often filled with challenges and difficulties. It is easy to assume that God’s favor will cut us some slack from the problems that others face, but reality is that we likely have a more difficult time than those who don’t take up their cross.
The great resurrection chapter ends with this urgent appeal for us to remain steadfast, immovable, and diligently working for the cause of Christ and the kingdom. The application is unmistakable: resurrection hope is basis for perseverance and dedicated continual service. It is the worth-all-ness of this great hope that outweighs all the adversity and challenges that life throws at us. There is no cost so great as to outweigh the reward of immortality at the return of Christ, and abundant life in the age to come.
Whether today is an especially difficult day or a generally worry-free day, it is important that we refocus on the hope set before us. “Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ” 1 Peter 1:13.
Did you catch that? “Set your hope fully”; get a target lock on the great resurrection hope, and let nothing deter or divert your focus. As we are elsewhere reminded, hope is to serve as the anchor that stabilizes and grounds our life.
Our work in the Lord is not in vain. You may be sorely tempted today to quit; to throw in the towel. Your faith may be hanging on by a thread, but a renewing revisit to your hope will reinforce and reinvigorate your life and work. A meaningful study of 1 Corinthians 15 today is prescribed to remedy discouragement and a sense of defeat.
